Low-barrier Emergency Shelter

Beginning in November 2024, we will provide year-round shelter at the Homeless Services Center located at 1111 N. Main St. Harrisonburg, VA. What is low-barrier? It means that our only two requirements are that 1) you are experiencing homelessness, and 2) you are over the age of 18. The shelter is only for adults, as we provide services for everyone, regardless.

The center is owned by the City of Harrisonburg, but Open Doors is the sole operator of the shelter and management agency over the future public daytime drop-in center. We rely on generous donors to provide our services, even after government subsidies.

Resource Coordination

Open Doors provides direct resource coordination to all shelter guests and broader resource navigation to those in need.

Resource coordination is focused on housing attainment and long-term success. We take a unique, client-focused approach.

Services may include assistance with obtaining vital documents, referrals to speciality services (such as healthcare or mental health services) or general case management. We are also committed to closing the access gap for our clients and the community by locating speciality services on site.

From April 21, 2024 to Oct. 13, 2024,

resource coordination is available at the following locations:

Tuesdays @ Asbury UMC | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
